Our 2030 strategy

After more than a decade building the social impact investment market, working with partners to help it grow it to over £11 billion, Better Society Capital is ready for its next chapter. We’re launching our 2026–30 strategy, and I want to explain what it means and why now.

When we started in 2012, the foundations of this market were already being laid by early adopters who understood that capital could do more than generate returns. Our role was to help build on that early promise. To demonstrate that a thriving, scalable market was possible, by building expertise and mobilising investment beyond our own. That work has come a long way. The infrastructure exists, the models have been tested and the market has real momentum. Now we need to scale what works, in the places where it matters most and where we can support the greatest size of change.

Four challenges. One ambition.

Our strategy focuses our expertise and capital on four challenge areas: housing, economic opportunity, health, and climate and energy. These have been carefully selected because each one combines an urgent social need, proven investment models, and a clear role for BSC to play. Each is an area where mobilising capital at scale can genuinely move the needle, not just at the margins.
Our ambition is to mobilise £20–30 billion in capital and positively impact 15-20 million lives over the next decade. We will achieve this by investing our own capital and by providing opportunities for others to invest for impact. We will continue to build partnerships, structures and expertise that unlock capital at scale. That means working with fund managers to develop and scale investment products. It means partnering with institutional investors and working with government, where we have shown that impact investment can accelerate policy priorities. And it means continuing our work with Access and Pathway to support the flow of finance to charities and social enterprises across the UK.
This strategy is ambitious; it needs to be. Social inequalities in the UK continue to grow and we need to work with our partners in the ecosystem to rapidly increase the scale of investment and impact. But we are also at a point in time when there is real opportunity to achieve these ambitions. I am excited about what I believe we can achieve over the next decade, the impact we can have on tens of millions of lives, by working with our partners to mobilise investment at scale.
